Good.

Cheap.

Fast.

Usually, you get to pick two.

Referrals are the weird exception.

A referred customer already trusts you, costs you nothing to find, and often comes to you ready to book.

Ask almost any owner where their best customers come from. You'll hear three words. "Word of mouth."

Then ask who sent them their last three customers.

Most can't tell you. And the ones who can probably didn’t say thank you.

In the last article, you built a website for $11. This time, you'll set up the thing that sends people to it.

Nielsen asked more than 40,000 people what advertising they trust. 88% said recommendations from people they know. It topped the list.

Some owners think good work is enough. They wait for referrals to show up. Here’s how to stop waiting.

The referral loop

A referral business runs on five parts. Ask for a referral, make it easy to give one, find out who sent the customer, thank them, and stay in touch. Then it starts over.

Most owners do the first part once in a while and skip the other four. The loop is what makes it recurring.

Take Mike, who runs an electrical shop.

1. Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after a customer tells you they're happy.

The job just wrapped. They left you a five-star review. They texted "thanks, looks great." That's the moment. Two weeks later, they've moved on.

If you set up the review ask from Issue 2, the review is your cue. Send the referral ask a day or two after it lands. Keep it to one ask per message. Never put the review ask and the referral ask in the same text.

Thanks again for the review, {First Name}. It means a lot. If anyone on your street needs electrical work, I'd be glad to help them too. Mike, Mike's Electric

2. Make it easy to pass along

"Send anyone my way" gets you nothing. Why? Because it forces the customer to think. Your customer won’t do that thinking for you.

Give them one face to picture instead.

An electrician asks, "Anyone on your street with an older panel like yours?"

A realtor asks, "Know anyone thinking about moving in the spring?"

A med spa says, "Bring a friend to your next appointment."

Then give them something to forward. That could be a text, a booking link, a referral card, a fridge magnet, or a coupon for the new customer.

3. Find out who sent them

This next step is what sets you apart as a business, and what everything else hangs on. If you don't know who sent a customer, you can't thank anyone.

Ask every new customer the same question. Put it on your website form and in your phone script.

Who sent you our way?

Write the answer down. A "Referred by" column in your job spreadsheet or CRM works fine.

4. Thank them every time

This is the part that makes it recurring.

Thank the referrer the same day the new customer calls. Don't wait to see if the job closes. You're thanking them for the introduction, not the sale.

{First Name}, {Referred Name} just called and said you sent them. Thank you. I'll take good care of them. Mike

Then close the loop when the job is done. People like knowing how it turned out.

Finished {Referred Name}'s panel today. They're all set. Thanks again for thinking of me.

For someone who sends you a second or third customer, call them yourself. A handwritten note or a small gift goes a long way too.

Realtors: federal law (RESPA) bans giving a past client anything in exchange for a referral. Stick to the thank-you text and the phone call.

I do this for my own business. Key partners who send me a client get 15 percent of that client's first year, and it's in a signed agreement.

I'm not a lawyer. If you're in a licensed field (like real estate), check your own rules before you reward a referral.

5. Stay the name they remember

People don't refer the best electrician they ever hired. They refer the one they remember. Make it a habit of checking in with your best referral partners.

Every 90 days, send a short note with no ask in it.

Hey {First Name}, Mike here. Just checking in. How's everything holding up since the job? No need to reply if all's good.

When they write back, that's a conversation. Sometimes it turns into "Actually, my brother-in-law needs an electrician."

Then you're back at step one.

And did you see what happened in this whole process? Your customers did the marketing for you.

Do it by hand tonight

You don't need any software for this. A spreadsheet and your phone cover it.

  1. Add the question. Put "Who sent you our way?" on your website form and next to your phone. Make it part of your routine.

  2. Make the list. Write down every referral you can remember from the last 12 months. Who came in, and who sent them.

  3. Send the thank-yous. Text every referrer on the list tonight. No ask. Just thank you.

  4. Write your one ask. One sentence, one face to picture, for your business.

  5. Set the reminders. Put a 90-day check-in on your calendar for everyone on the list.

Want it to run on its own? The tool I use is HighLevel. A "referred by" answer on the form can tag the referrer, text them a thank-you, and remind you to call.
